Each state runs its own operator certification program — usually a combination of education, operating experience under a certified operator, and a passing score on a state exam. Most states tier licenses (Class IV to Class I, or Grade 1–4), with higher grades allowing operation of larger or more complex plants. Most state wastewater operator exams run 80–150 multiple-choice questions timed over 2–4 hours. Content covers the plant flow path, process control, lab procedures, maintenance, safety, regulations, and operator math (detention time, dosing, solids). Yes. Nearly every state requires continuing education contact hours to renew a wastewater operator certificate — typically 12–24 hours per renewal cycle, depending on license grade. Approved courses include state short schools, WE&AETF and ABC offerings, and operator association training. Check your state page for the renewal requirement.
