Solids Loading Rate

Calculates the solids loading rate (SLR) — pounds of solids per day applied per square foot of secondary clarifier area. SLR is the limiting variable for clarifier thickening capacity and is essential when running the basin at higher MLSS or higher RAS ratios.

Formula
Solids Loading Rate (lbs/day/sq ft) = (MLSS × Flow × 8.34) ÷ Clarifier Surface Area
Variables & Units
MLSS(mg/L)

Mixed liquor suspended solids entering the clarifier.

Flow(MGD)

Mixed liquor flow to the clarifier = forward flow + RAS flow.

Clarifier Surface Area(sq ft)

Plan area of the clarifier in square feet.

Worked Example
MLSS 3,000 mg/L at a combined 2.0 MGD (forward 1.5 + RAS 0.5) flow in a 2,827 sq ft clarifier: SLR = (3,000 × 2.0 × 8.34) ÷ 2,827 = 50,040 ÷ 2,827 = 17.7 lbs/day/sq ft. Typical secondary clarifier SLR limit: 25–35 lbs/day/sq ft at average flow and 35–50 at peak. An SLR above 30 lbs/day/sq ft at average flow indicates the clarifier is at its thickening limit — RAS rate or wasting must increase.
