WEFTEC 2026 Highlights Circular Water Economy
At the 2026 WEFTEC conference in New Orleans, the Water Environment Federation (WEF) prioritized the circular water economy, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. Leaders emphasized that the sector must evolve to view wastewater as a resource to be recovered rather than a waste stream.
During the opening sessions, industry leaders addressed the interconnected challenges of aging infrastructure and a changing workforce. WEF introduced new initiatives, including a workforce hub and the David Jenkins Operator Scholarship, to support the professional development of those managing water resource recovery facilities. Discussions also centered on the $47 billion potential value of a fully implemented circular water economy in the U.S. Experts stressed that integrating energy and nutrient recovery, along with digital resilience against cyber threats, is essential for the future of sustainable water utility management.
