Sonoma Water Mandated to Upgrade Guerneville Wastewater System Following Storm Overflows

Sonoma Water is undertaking operational overhauls and infrastructure evaluations across the Guerneville wastewater collection system under regional regulatory directives. Required measures include deploying specialized flow meters, retrofitting flood-vulnerable manholes, and updating emergency pumping procedures. The agency is also launching a comprehensive inflow and infiltration assessment to prevent sanitary sewer overflows during atmospheric river events.

Following heavy winter storms that led to wastewater overflows earlier this year, Sonoma Water has initiated immediate infrastructure and operational improvements across the Guerneville sanitation system in Northern California. Regional environmental authorities have ordered the agency to install dedicated flow monitoring equipment throughout vulnerable sewer segments to monitor system capacity in real time.

In addition to flow meters, the utility is preparing a formal corrective action plan that includes operational protocols for severe weather, expanded staff response training, and the deployment of portable pumps and temporary storage units during heavy storm runoff. System engineers are also assessing and sealing flood-prone manhole covers to prevent stormwater intrusion into sewer mains.

The project marks the start of a multi-phase structural rehabilitation plan for the Russian River basin collection infrastructure, concluding with a comprehensive inflow and infiltration (I&I) engineering study designed to protect regional water quality during wet-weather seasons.
