The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the availability of $30 million in grant funding under its Real Water Technical Assistance Initiative, targeted directly at strengthening small, rural, and underserved water and wastewater systems. The funding will support third-party technical providers in delivering operational training, compliance assistance, and asset management support to small utilities across the United States.

Many small wastewater utilities operate with limited personnel and face escalating technical and capital challenges, from managing wet-weather flows to adhering to complex permit requirements. This federal initiative focuses on building workforce competency and improving operational performance through hands-on technical guidance.

Additionally, the program is tailored to help smaller utilities identify infrastructure deficiencies and prepare competitive applications for capital loans under the Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds. Applications for the grant program are being processed across designated non-profit and educational technical assistance organizations.
